5 Reasons Why Your Domestic Boiler May Be Leaking
A domestic boiler that is leaking is actually quite a serious problem. It often indicates an internal component is broken and so finding the source is an important step. Whether a problem with pressure or a corroded part, at Direct Heating, we are here to help so read on this week for 5 reasons why your domestic boiler may be leaking.
Corroded Pipework
Corrosion is a common cause of domestic boiler problems and it’s because pipes or tanks can wear away, eventually weakening and leading to leaks. If it’s only one part that’s affected, such as a valve this can easily be replaced, however, if the problem’s extensive and more than one part, your boiler may be beyond repair.
Cracks in Your Domestic Boiler
As a boiler gets older it’s perfectly normal for it to develop some flaws. Repetitive warming and cooling can cause the metal to contract which could eventually lead to a crack in the boiler. If this is the reason your boiler is leaking it’s usually very easy to spot, however, it’s quite costly to fix so if your boiler is old maybe consider getting a replacement.
A Heat Exchanger Issue
The heat exchanger is one of a boilers most expensive components but this doesn’t mean they are resistant to faults, especially in older boilers. If the cause of your leak is related to this then, unfortunately, your boiler is also beyond repair – replacing this part is considered a false economy and so a new boiler model it is.
Your Domestic Boiler Is Under Pressure
When a boiler’s pressure is too high it can cause a leak from the pressure valve. This essentially means your boiler is working overtime and dripping to release this excessive pressure. Bleeding your radiators could help with this issue, you will just need a bleed key. Alternatively, a gas engineer should be able to deal with this problem for you quite quickly.
Leaks from Seals on Internal Parts
With a domestic boiler, sometimes parts can deteriorate over time. For instance, if the pressures too high, seals can fail and cause water to leak out rapidly. You can check for leaks in seals at home quite easily and without any backup. Simply remove the boiler cover if you’re comfortable with this and have a look for anything suspicious.
